What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Does for Clients

Criminal defense lawyers are tasked with representing individuals charged with crimes to help reduce the charges or get them thrown out completely. There are a few different ways that an attorney will go about this. The video above explains some of the main things a criminal defense attorney should do to successfully represent their client.

The first thing they need to do is investigate the charges being brought against the defendant. Usually, charges are filed after a complaint, which outlines the reasons why the charges need to be brought forward. A criminal defense lawyer needs to see how the prosecution is charging the defendant and the sentencing each charge carries.

The second thing they need to do is investigate the evidence. Once you’re charged with a crime, the prosecution needs to hand over all of the evidence against you. Video tapes, police reports, witness statements, etc all need to be given to you and your defense attorney. The attorney will go through and see if anything was done incorrectly to throw away key pieces of evidence.

It’s important to be in constant communication with your attorney, too. All of the details of the case need to be given to the defendant so they know what to expect. For more information, check out the video above.
